I’ve lived in Canterbury for years, and I think Christchurch is one of those places people can seriously underestimate for a weekend away.
When people think of a Christchurch weekend, a few familiar favourites usually come to mind.
The tram. The gondola. Riverside Market. Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Maybe a day trip to Akaroa.
A drive out to Waipara wine country to sample some of our fabulous local wines.
And they’re all there for a good reason.
But when I think about a really good girls’ weekend in Christchurch, I don’t think about ticking attractions off a list.
I think about how the whole weekend feels.
A beautiful lunch that goes on a little longer than planned. A few wines. Somewhere fabulous for dinner. Maybe a massage or a wellness experience. Something fun or unexpected. And enough time in between everything to actually enjoy being away together.
Because there’s nothing worse than coming home from a weekend away feeling like you need another weekend to recover from it.
START WITH THE KIND OF WEEKEND YOU ACTUALLY WANT
Before deciding what to do, I’d start with the group.
Are you celebrating a birthday? Is this the first time everyone has managed to get together in a year? Do you want foodie and wine? Wellness? Adventure? A big night out? Or a bit of everything?
Because eight women saying “let’s do Christchurch for the weekend” can mean eight completely different things.
And there is nearly always one person who ends up trying to work it all out.
She was probably the one who said:
“We seriously need to organise something.”
Six weeks later, she has seventeen browser tabs open, three restaurant menus saved, screenshots flying around the group chat and everyone asking:
“So… what are we actually doing?”
That’s where a fun idea can very quickly turn into a job.
And it’s exactly the part IKONIC DESTINATIONS wants to take away.
CHRISTCHURCH IS MADE FOR A WEEKEND YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN
One of the things I love about Christchurch is the variety.
You can stay right in the city and make a weekend of it.
Start slowly. Find somewhere great for brunch or coffee. Wander through the central city, the Arts Centre or Riverside Market. Add something a little indulgent in the afternoon, then head back to where you’re staying with enough time to relax and get ready properly before dinner.
And Christchurch has become such a good foodie city.
I love a restaurant that gets the whole experience right — not just what’s on the plate, but the atmosphere, the service and those little details that make you remember a place afterwards.
For a celebration, I want somewhere that feels like you’ve actually gone out.
Then there are cocktails afterwards, if that’s your group’s thing.
Or maybe dinner runs late because everyone is having such a good time that nobody wants to leave.
Perfect.
That’s exactly what a weekend away should have room for.

THEN THERE’S THE WELLNESS SIDE OF CHRISTCHURCH
Wellness doesn’t have to mean turning the entire weekend into a retreat.
I actually love adding it as one layer of a trip.
It could be a massage, hot pools, yoga, time outside or simply a slower morning after a big night.
You might spend one part of the weekend doing something indulgent and another drinking wine over a long lunch.
Those things aren’t mutually exclusive.
In fact, that combination is much closer to how I personally like to travel.
I want the beautiful dinner and the massage.
The wine and the morning where nobody has to rush.
That balance is one of the things I want to bring into experiences with IKONIC DESTINATIONS.
AND THEN CHRISTCHURCH OPENS UP INTO CANTERBURY
This is where it gets really interesting.
Christchurch doesn’t have to be the whole weekend. It can be the base for exploring somewhere completely different.
You’ve got Waipara and North Canterbury wine country for cellar doors, local producers, beautiful food and those long lunches where suddenly half the afternoon has disappeared.
There’s Akaroa, with its beautiful harbour, dramatic scenery, foodie experiences and even a world-class vineyard, all wrapped up in that completely different Banks Peninsula feeling.
Hanmer Springs brings hot pools, wellness and adventure.
Kaikōura gives you dramatic coastline, whale watching, the seal colony, fishing and incredible local experiences — with the mountains meeting the sea in a way that makes the whole place feel pretty spectacular.
And Methven brings mountains, hot pools, adventure and seasonal experiences around Mt Hutt.
That’s six very different Canterbury destinations when you include Christchurch itself.
You don’t need to try to do all of them.
The exciting part is choosing the one that fits your group.

I’D RATHER DO LESS AND ENJOY IT MORE
Making space for what matters is what I love about travel.
More isn’t automatically better.
I don’t want to cram every available hour just because there are twenty things we could do.
Some of my favourite travel memories have happened in the spaces between the things I booked.
A lunch that runs for three hours.
Going back to your room for a nap before dinner.
Getting ready together with music on and a glass of wine.
Finding somewhere for one more drink because nobody is ready to go home.
Or changing the plan because everyone is tired and sitting somewhere beautiful talking is actually exactly what the group needs.
For me, a great weekend has a rhythm to it.
You have the things you’re really excited about, but you also have room to enjoy them.
THE PLACES MATTER — BUT SO DO THE DETAILS
When I’m exploring Christchurch and Canterbury for IKONIC DESTINATIONS, I’m looking at much more than whether somewhere photographs well.
And let's talk about dietary requirements, because this one really matters to me. I'm gluten-free, and I know firsthand how quickly a beautiful dining experience can lose its sparkle when there's nothing suitable on the menu. Great food is a big part of travelling, and nobody should feel left out.
It's why I ask a few important questions when I'm curating an experience:
What’s the service like?
Is the food actually good?
Would I send my own friends there?
Can a group actually sit together comfortably and talk?
Can they properly cater for dietary requirements?
Is it genuinely worth what they’re charging?
Would it work for someone who doesn’t drink?
How does it fit with everything else around it?
And what is going to make someone leave thinking:
“OMG, that was amazing!”
Sometimes that will be somewhere everyone already knows.
Sometimes it’ll be a brilliant little local find.
And sometimes the right decision is not adding another thing at all.
That’s why The IKONIC Edit will share the places I love, the things I’m discovering and the experiences I genuinely think are worth knowing about — without turning every article into a minute-by-minute itinerary.
Because the same Christchurch weekend won’t work for everybody.
SO, HOW WOULD I SPEND A WEEKEND IN CHRISTCHURCH?
I’d eat really well.
I’d enjoy several really amazing glasses of wine.
I’d have at least one experience that felt a little indulgent.
I’d leave enough time to get ready for dinner without someone shouting that the Uber is already outside.
I’d make room for something we hadn’t done before.
More importantly, I’d think about who I was travelling with.
Because that’s what changes everything.
A 40th birthday should feel different from a bridal weekend.
A group of friends who haven’t seen each other properly in years probably needs a different pace from a group coming away for adventure.
And a weekend with two non-drinkers shouldn’t be built entirely around wine just because Canterbury happens to have incredible wineries.
The destination gives us the possibilities.
The people give the weekend its personality.

A Weekend You’ll Still Be Talking About
When everyone’s home again and the photos start appearing in the group chat, I doubt the conversation will be about how efficiently you got around Canterbury.
It’ll be the lunch nobody wanted to leave. Something hilarious that happened getting ready for dinner. The experience one of you was hesitant about that turned out to be everyone’s favourite.
That’s the weekend I’d want to create. Christchurch and Canterbury give us so much to choose from; the care is in choosing what belongs in your trip, then leaving enough room for it to become your own.
And to the woman who first said, “We seriously need to organise something”—I want you in those stories and photos, enjoying yourself. You deserve to come home with wonderful memories of the weekend you made happen.
YOU SUGGESTED THE TRIP. YOU SHOULD GET TO ENJOY IT TOO.
If you’re the person who finally got everybody together, you shouldn’t spend the weekend checking confirmation emails, chasing dietary requirements, organising transport, watching the clock and telling everyone where they need to be next.
You should be sitting at the table with everyone else.
Tell IKONIC DESTINATIONS who’s coming, what you’re celebrating, what your group loves, what they absolutely don’t want and how you want the weekend to feel.
We’ll curate the rest.
